Abstract

Measurements are central to the practice of science and should be to science learning as well. Measurement essentially involves movement from qualitative to quantitative accounts of these phenomena. We propose that moving from qualitative experience of attributes of objects to quantifying them occurs through some intermediate steps like comparison, seriation and use of a referent. We observed 6 students’ measurement experiences and responses to a sequence of questions and tasks based on experiencing the objects qualitatively to quantifying attributes of those objects.
